Artist’s Statement

Aubrey White was born at home in Tucson, Arizona and was raised primarily in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  She moved to California for most of her schooling and sees the city of Los Angeles as her greatest influence.  The city’s vast landscapes provide a rich pallet for writing; its diverse populations call attention to community.  In education, work, and writing, Aubrey has strived to understand how people find a sense of place, self, and community in the spaces they inhabit.

Aubrey completed a M.S. in Community Development at the University of California, Davis where she worked on issues of sustainable agriculture and environmental justice amongst immigrant populations.  Her writing and research has appeared in the Los Angeles Alternative, The Golden Gate University Environmental Law Journal, and Environmental Research.  She attended the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies to enrich her academic work with stronger writing skills and to begin her career in freelance journalism.  Following her time at Salt, Aubrey plans to start a farm with friends in western Massachusetts and continue her writing pursuits.  She secretly hopes to someday open a restaurant, should writing prove not challenging enough.
