This video was made from stills taken by Donald R. Pettit during his stay at the International Space Station in 2003. I can’t help, but feel moved when I watch this. You can see so much, the many stars in the background, the lights, man. It is real. It is really happening. This is outer space. This is the Earth’s atmosphere.
1. Jesse Jackson wants to cut Barack Obama’s nuts off.
2. Nas proclaims: “We don’t need Jesse. I’m here. I got this.“
We have our new leaders, like Obama, David Banner, and Young Jeezy.
3. Somewhat unrelated, Nas donates to PBS because of Fox News.
Yesterday I got all excited and set up a couple views of my work to be recorded simultaneously. I had a web cam facing the window in front of my desk, iSight for my face, and the third view on my desktop. I recorded from 12 pm to 4:30 pm. The video is about 3 minutes long. (All made possible by Gawker in combination with macam.)
There are things that I find myself revisiting in my mind a lot. Not necessarily moments in time, but images that represent specific times. Whenever I make westside hand sign, which is usually when I get REALLY into dancing, I think of this video by Westside Connection:
Now that’s something classic.
So it’s not necessarily that video, it is where I was, the general atmosphere, when I first saw that video. It was the FEELING. That’s the f-ed thing about memory. It’s not about what happened, the facts, it’s about how it FELT. Sometimes, driving around L.A. in the late afternoon feels like this video, the 90’s, Top Gun, or Short Cuts:
Now that’s not to say I have visuals for everything, but more I wanted to show how absurd and mundane these memories can be. It’s like a weird phrase someone said some time. It’s not big memories. It’s not even things I am consciously thinking of most of the time. These memories are what I use to judge situations. And most of the time I don’t even realize that they are the criteria.
Some of them I’m not even sure if they are REAL memories. It seems like they have been altered over time through using them. I.E. Does anyone remember cheetah fader? I can’t find a link anywhere. I think that’s what it was called though. It made the text rainbowy when you were typing in aol. This is when we had dialup. 28K dialup. Anyhow, it’s stuff like that. Weird, pseudo memories about nonsense.
Vimeo, my video sharing site of choice, has a running project called 5 Vignettes1. I really like this project because:
1. You have to find the most interesting five seconds of each video
2. The outcome is often very esoteric
3. The videos are short and retain the interest of the viewers
Without further ado here are my Vignettes for any occasion:
1“Great idea for a project, I applaud you! Jim Jarmusch would be proud of us!!!!!!!!”
